Roman shades are a type of window covering made from fabric that folds into neat horizontal pleats when raised and lies flat when lowered. Available in a wide variety of fabrics, colors, and opacities, they offer a versatile solution for controlling light and adding a polished, custom look to your home.
Our Most Loved Roman Shade Styles
Blackout Roman Shades: Total Darkness, Done Beautifully
If better sleep is the goal, start here. Blackout Roman shades paired with a dedicated blackout liner blocks virtually all incoming light, making them the go-to choice for bedrooms, nurseries and media room and an outside mount (more on that below) helps seal light gaps at the edges for near-total darkness.
Blackout vs. Light Filtering - What's the Difference
- Blackout Roman shades use an opaque liner for our highest level of light control. Pick these for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms or if you need a darker room to sleep during the day.
- Light filtering Roman shades let a soft, diffused glow through while preserving daytime privacy, ideal for living rooms, kitchens, and dining rooms where you want warmth without the glare.
- Room darkening options offer a balance between light liftering and blackout, dimming a room substantially without full blackout.
Top-Down / Bottom-Up Roman Shades: Privacy and Daylight at the Same Time
One of our most-loved upgrades solves the classic challenge: how do you enjoy natural light without sacrificing privacy? Lower the shade from the top to let sunlight in while the while keeping the bottom portion of your window covered or raise it from the bottom like a traditional shade.
It's the perfect solution for street-facing bedrooms, bathrooms, first-floor living rooms and home offices where you want daylight without a view into your space. Combine top-down /bottom-up operation with a light filtering fabric to enjoy soft natural light while maintaining privacy throughout the day.
Fabrics That Set the Tone
The fabric you choose does more than control light — it defines the whole look of the room. Order up to 10 free samples to compare colors and textures in your own lighting before you buy.
Linen Roman shades. Airy, organic and effortlessly elegant, linen and linen-look weaves are one of our most popular fabric families. Their natural texture softens modern spaces and elevates traditional ones, filtering light for a warm, sunlit glow. If you love the layered designer look, pair linen Roman shades with curtains and drapes for extra depth.
Fabric Roman shades in solids and patterns. Cotton blends and easy-care polyesters offer the widest range of colors and prints. From timeless neutrals to statement florals and geometrics, they're durable, simple to maintain, and available across every opacity.
Prefer natural woven textures? If you're drawn to the organic look of bamboo, explore our Bamboo / Woven Wood Shades collection. They fold and operate like a Roman shade but are woven from bamboo, reeds and grasses for a relaxed, coastal feel.
Roman Shades Lift Systems: Cordless, Motorized and More
Cordless Roman shades. A gentle push or pull on the bottom rail is all it takes. Cordless operation delivers the cleanest look on the market and eliminates cord hazards for little hands and paws, which is why it's our most recommended lift for family homes. Browse all cordless window treatments.
Motorized Roman shades. Raise and lower your shades from the couch, on a schedule or with a voice command through your smart home hub. Motorized shades are ideal for hard-to-reach windows, large banks of glass and anyone who loves waking up to automated morning light. Explore remote control and smart home options.
Continuous cord loop. A wall-anchored loop provides smooth, controlled lifting for oversized or heavier shades.
No drill Roman shades. Renting? Working with tile, brick, or vinyl frames you'd rather not touch? Our No Drill Roman Shades install without screws or holes, so you get a custom, tailored look with zero damage — and your security deposit stays intact. See the full no-drill collection.
Roman Shades for Every Room
Roman shades for the kitchen. Kitchens are where Roman shades truly earn their keep: they add softness to a room full of hard surfaces while staying neatly out of the way of counters and sinks. Choose an easy-clean, moisture-resistant fabric with light filtering opacity to keep the space functional and bright. More inspiration in our kitchen window treatments guide.
Roman shades for the bedroom. Pair a blackout liner with a cordless or motorized lift for the ultimate sleep setup: dark, quiet and safe. Top-down/ bottom-up operation is a favorite for street-facing bedrooms. Explore more bedroom window treatments.
Roman shades for the living room. This is the room guests see most, so lead with fabric: a textured linen or a designer pattern instantly upgrades the space. Light filtering opacities keep the room warm and welcoming; layer with drapery panels or a custom valance for a full designer treatment.
Roman shades for the dining room and home office. In dining rooms, Roman shades set an intimate mood and tame glare during daytime meals. In offices, they cut screen glare and keep video-call backgrounds polished and professional.
Roman Fold Styles Explained: Flat, Hobbled or Relaxed
- Flat fold shades hang smooth and seamless when lowered — the most modern, tailored look, and an excellent canvas for patterned fabric.
- Hobbled (waterfall) fold shades feature soft, cascading loops of fabric down the full length of the shade, even when lowered. The extra fabric adds depth, dimension and a classic touch.
- Relaxed fold shades curve gently at the bottom hem in a subtle smile shape. This casual, romantic style is best suited to windows where the shade stays mostly lowered.

Why Choose Roman Shades?
Few window treatments do as much in a single package:
Timeless style, endless variety. From crisp solids and natural linen weaves to bold patterns, Roman window shades complement everything from farmhouse kitchens to modern lofts. Because every shade is custom made, you're never limited to stock sizes or colors.
Precise light control and privacy. Raise them fully for an open view, lower them for complete privacy, or stop anywhere in between. Choose light filtering fabric to soften sunlight or a blackout liner to shut it out entirely.
Energy efficiency. A lined fabric shade adds an insulating layer at – your window, helping reduce solar heat in summer and limit cold drafts in winter. That means a more comfortable home year-round and the potential to lower energy costs.
Safer by design. Cordless and motorized lift options remove dangling cords, making Roman shades a smart pick for homes with children and pets. Learn more about our child safety options.
Inside Mount vs. Outside Mount: Which Is Right for You?
It's the question we hear most, and the answer shapes both look and performance:
Inside mount installs the shade within the window frame for a clean, built-in appearance that shows off your trim. It does require enough frame depth to house the headrail and folds. Be sure to check the depth requirements on your product page before ordering.
Outside mount installs the shade on the wall or trim above the window, overlapping the opening on all sides. It’s a great choice for shallow window frames, creating the illusion of a larger window, or maximizing light control with blackout shades by helping reduce light gaps around the edges.
Either way, measuring takes about five minutes with steel tape. Follow our step-by-step how to measure guide and with our SureFit™ Guarantee, if you measure incorrectly, we'll remake your shade for free.
Easy Installation: DIY or Let Us Handle It
Most Roman shades install in minutes with just a drill and a screwdriver: mount two or three brackets, click on the headrail, done. Our installation guides and videos walk you through every step. Prefer to leave it to a pro? Add professional measure and install to your order at checkout.
